The best places to build houses in the Stockholm region

Hello! I am an architect at a construction company with many years of experience from both planning and implementation of new construction house projects in Stockholm County and surrounding regions. Here I share insights about some particularly attractive places within a few hours commuting distance from Stockholm – along with the most important factors to consider for those who are thinking of building new.

Värmdö

As close to the archipelago as you can get by car. Värmdö combines modern buildings with a genuine archipelago environment-perfect for those who seek a quality of life close to nature but do not want to compromise on the proximity to Stockholm.

Trosa

A charming little town, about an hour’s drive south of town. Wooden houses, cafes and seaside environments provide a cozy small-town feel and natural relaxation. At the same time, investments are made in sustainable development and well-thought-out construction projects.

Ekerö / Mälaröarna

Ideal for those who want to live rural but still have good infrastructure. Mälaröarna offers historic farms, greenery and waterfront areas – without sacrificing service or commuting to the city.

Gnesta / Nykvarn

Municipalities further out, where agricultural land is converted into plots – an attractive option for those looking for better land prices and more room for manoeuvre.

Sörmland Coast-Nynäshamn & Järna

Beautiful sea coves – forest and coastal land-with more reasonable land prices than inner city coast. Nynäshamn in particular offers a simple, charming coastal location.

Roslagen & Norrtälje-trakten

The municipality of Norrtälje – with areas such as Hallstavik and Kapellskär-offers both a rural network and proximity to the archipelago feeling. Reasonable land prices, access to infrastructure and good building conditions make the area popular for both holiday homes and permanent housing.

Märsta & Sigtuna

Close to Arlanda and with shuttle access to Stockholm. Märsta is growing and expanding, with more residential areas and mixed development – a logical choice for families or commuters who want a balance between city and country.

Central Sundbyberg

Sundbyberg may not be” a few hours ” away, but is a very attractive suburb to consider. The Old Station, the tunnel, the shuttle and the funicular provide excellent communication – and it is a charming, well-liked place to build or live in close to the city.

Åkersberga / Vallentuna

Quiet, close to nature and child friendly. You get more for your money in Vallentuna/Åkersberga compared to other places

Nyköping

Located about 100 km southwest of Stockholm and offers scenic environments, historic city centers and more affordable housing prices – often appreciated by those looking for a balance between price value and proximity to the big city.

Conclusion

The choice of location is often about a balance between nature experience, commuting and residential conditions. If you want a truly natural archipelago – invest in Värmdö, Ekerö or Nynäshamn. If you are looking for affordability and building possibilities – look towards Gnesta, Norrtälje, Nyköping or Märsta. For active commuters, Sundbyberg and Vallentuna are strong options.
